Following a brief outline of human history, we explore how our knowledge of bacteria and viruses helped develop the civilization we live in today. In this editorial, we tackle questions such as: how our knowledge of biology changed the way we view our personal hygiene and the hygiene of our communities, towns and cities over time. How our lack of this knowledge contributed to epidemics like the Black Plague which decimated Europe during the dark ages. And, how our globally connected world presented new challenges with dealing with pandemics like COVID-19.
